Is There A Connection Between Understaffed Hospitals And Medical Malpractice?

What the number of staff is relative to the number of patients is not something that registers with any individual entering a medical facility in their time of need.  A patients primary concern is their own illness, healthcare and well being. Unfortunately, a shortage of medical staff may be something to consider should you or a loved one need medical care.

Understaffing can lead to injury or death

A shortage of medical staff can result in injury or death.  In 2016 it was alleged that understaffing in a Hospital Operating Room lead to the death of two patients. Later a correction plan was submitted by the hospital in question.

Nursing Shortage

Nurses play a vital role in a patients medical care and numerous studies over the last few years have indicated that a shortage of nurses, among other things, can lead to infection and death. When the nurse-to-patient ratio is high, the nursing staff may become overworked. In these cases, a nurse may be unable to care, advocate and follow-up with a patient in a manner consistent with proper care. The nursing staff may be unable to determine an accurate diagnosis and even discharge a patient too soon from the hospital.

Every element involved in receiving the best possible care from your nurse is affected by the level of work the nurse is exposed to especially if he or she is overworked.

Medical Malpractice

Medical Malpractice is the result of a medical facility, physician, nurse or other health professionals neglect of a patient during the course of care or treatment. Malpractice can also result from a lack of care. Both instances lead to the injury of the patient. Whether there is an error during a medical procedure, treatment or misdiagnosis, malpractice is a serious matter.
